Now the only city to have ever been chosen three times to host the modern Olympic Games, London will be at the center of the world’s attention come summer 2012. There will be about 17000 athletes competing who will be staying in purpose built Accommodation in London. London made its successful bid in 2005 with the 117th IOC meeting, which took place in Singapore. Noteworthy competition for the bid was New York City, Moscow, Paris, and Madrid. The slogan of the forthcoming games is a cheerful “Live as one”, and it is likely that 205 countries and 18,500 athletes will participate.
The new Olympic Park will be erected in a rejuvenated Stratford, and a large variety of venues have been planned, including existing historic buildings and fresh ones built specifically for the London games. However, in an effort to avoid leaving behind any white elephants after the 2012 Olympics are over, organizers intend to create stadiums that will either be recycled and reused by Londoners in the wake of the games or be transferred to other parts of the country for similar purposes.
At present, organizers of the London games judge that about eight million tickets will be offered for the 2012 Olympic Games and one and half million offered for the Paralympic Games. Though ticket orders were made available from March 2010, the actual sale won’t occur until the spring of 2011. At this date, in an effort to prevent traffic problems, anybody who has pre-ordered a ticket will have free use of the London transportation network. It is anticipated that about 82% of Olympic tickets and 63% of Paralympic tickets will actually find their way into the hands of buyers.
Two different emblems have been created for the games. The first, designed by Kino Design, was produced for the bidding process, and the other, made by Wolff Olins at a cost of four hundred thousand pounds, is now the official logo. This design involves an abstract depiction of the year “2012” with the Olympic Rings placed in the zero and is to be shown in four different colors: orange, green, magenta, and blue. Even though the polled opinion of the design has so far been low, clothes bearing the brand have enjoyed successful sales since 2008.
It has been decided that the 2012 Olympics in London will include twenty-six sports with thirty-eight disciplines, and the Paralympics will have twenty sports and twenty-one disciplines all together. Though London’s bid originally incorporated a roster of twenty-eight sports, the IOC elected to get rid of baseball and softball. Even though they will remain Olympic sports, officially they were played for the last time in the Beijing games.
