Asbestos is a naturally occurring substance, used for a number of purposes in the construction industry. There are two groups of asbestos, Serpentine and Amphibole. The most common Serpentine asbestos is Chrysotile which can be woven and is used for things like fire blankets and oven seals, and also for binding cement and plastics. Amphibole is the form of asbestos which is considered a danger to the health. This is because it can break down into tiny splintered fragments which although microscopic can have grave effects on the health if inhaled.
Asbestos may be found in your home in the form of textured wall coverings like Artex(also sold under trade names such as Suretex and Newtex) ,underfloor insulation and asbestos insulation board.
